NASA unveils why Moon have dark patches

Moon has some mysterious black patches and we have always been thinking why it has those figures or patches but now NASA has discovered the reason behind those swirling patterns of light and dark on the Moon.

The scientists have told that these patterns are called “lunar swirls” which appears as painted on the lunar surface of the Moon.

These patterns are unique and we have always been seeing these features on the Moon but till now we did not know the exact reason behind those patterns. The NASA scientist Keller said that Lunar swirls can be of ten miles across and appear in groups or just isolated features.

Earlier scientist thought that these patterns were formed because of a magnetic field embedded in the lunar crust and the bright areas in the swirls appear to be less weathered their surroundings.

There could many reasons of causing material exposed to space to change chemically and darken over time, including impacts from microscopic meteorites and the effects of the solar wind a million mile- per – hour stream of electrically charged conducting gas blown from the surface of the sun.

Maybe the swirls and the magnetic fields could both have formed from plumes of material ejected by comet impacts or when fine dust particles get lofted by micrometeorite impacts, an existing magnetic field over the swirls sorts them according to their susceptibility to magnetism, forming light and dark patterns with different compositions.

For this research scientist created a new computer models that provide new insights into how magnetic shield hypothesis could work.

Bill Farrell of NASA said "The problem with the magnetic shield idea is that the embedded magnetic fields on the Moon are very weak about 300 times weaker than Earth's magnetic field. It's hard to see how they would have the strength to deflect the solar wind ions. ”

The new models have shown that the magnetic field can create a strong electric field when the solar wind attempts to flow through.
