What is Fatty Liver and its causes



What is Fatty Liver?

When fat is built up in the liver then this condition is called steatosis or fatty liver. The liver has some fat in it and this normal. If fat is more than 5% to 10% then it is the situation which you should be concerned about it because this condition is called fatty liver. 

The good fact about this condition is that it is a reversible condition that can be resolved if proper care is taken with changed behavior. More often there are no symptoms and it typically does not cause permanent damage.

The liver is the second largest organ of the body and plays a major role in our body because it process everything we eat or drink and filter out the harmful substances from the blood and this crucial process gets interrupted when more fat starts accumulating on it. Usually the liver repairs itself by building new liver cells when the old cells get damaged. When there is a repeated damage to the liver, permanent scarring takes place and this condition is called cirrhosis.

Fatty liver is a common problem which happens to people around the globe. In United States it was that around 10 to 20 percent people have too much fat in their liver, but on the same hand inflammation or damage is present. One more thing which was found is that it commonly happens in people between ages 40 to 60.

Symptoms of Fatty Liver

Typically there are no symptoms which are associated with Fatty Liver condition but as people having this condition has told that they feel fatigue or vague abdominal discomfort. The Liver may also become slightly large and doctor can find this by physical examination.

Sometimes excess fat in the liver can cause inflammation. If the liver has become inflamed, the person may lose weight wit weak appetite, abdominal pain, confusion and weakness.

What are the causes of fatty liver?

The main cause associated with fatty liver condition is alcoholism and heavy drinking. In most of the cases doctors do not know the exact causes of fatty liver in people who are not alcoholic. It is also found that fatty liver develops when the body creates too much fat or cannot metabolize fat enough and the excess fat starts getting accumulated in liver cells which eventually forms fatty liver. There is no direct connection found between eating high fat diet and fatty liver and alcoholism is the main reason behind the fatty liver.

Obesity

High levels of fats in the blood or the condition called hyperlimidemia is also one of the reason which results in fatty liver.

Diabetes

Person having sugar or diabetes also has chances of fatty liver which may be due to genetic inheritance.

Sugar maybe caused due to rapid weight loss or side effects of certain medications like aspirin, steroids, and tetracycline.

Liver damage is a very big problem and should be diagnosed an cured on time so please take care of your liver in order to have other body functions to work properly and save yourself from liver damage.
