A study has proved that
addiction to your phone may lead to depression and anxiety in youth people or
college age students.
It was done by the
University of Ilinois' alejandro Llera who conducted this study with
undergraduate honors student Tayana Panova, said that there is a long history
of the public fearing new technologies as they are deployed in society and the
fear of the new technology happened with television, video games and now
smartphones have also joined this league.
In this survey study Llera
and Panova surveyed over 300 University students who were given questionnaires
that addressed the students' mental health, the amount of mobile phone usage
and using internet.
The questionnaire had some
direct questions asked from the participants like Do you think that your
academic or work performance has been negatively affected by your mobile phone
use? And Do you think that life without the internet is boring, sad and empty.
The goal of this study was
to find that if addictive and self- destructive behaviors with phones and the
internet related to mental health.
And in this study it was
found that people who self-described as having really addictive towards the
internet and mobile phones scored much higher on depression and anxiety scales.
However, there was no direct
relation found between the mobile phones or internet use and negative mental
health outcomes among the people who participated in the event and who used
these technologies to kill their boredom. It was also noticed from the findings
of this study that the motivation for going online is an important factor in
relating technology usage to depression and anxiety.
The study is published in
the journal Computers in Human Behavior
But it think that it is too
early to link the mobile phones and internet with depression and anxiety as
there are lot more factors in our lives which leads us to depression or anxiety
and those factors and reasons should also be considered while reviewing these
kind of important topics.
Maybe in most of the case i
think that internet and mobile has opened new gateways and opportunities for
the people around the world which makes them updated with tons of information
and people with whom anyone can connect no matter in which part of the globe
the other person is available.
