The
Supreme Court has refused to ban slaughtering of animals for religious purpose.
A PIL was filed by a person called V Radhakrishnan, who is a journalist by
profession and from Tamil Nadu. He pleaded in the court that the slaughtering of
animals should be banned as it does benefit anyone but the court said that the
rituals are centuries old and decision cannot be taken with closed eyes as this
matter is very sensitive which also related to the feelings and beliefs of
people.
The Bench
was headed by the Judge HL Dattu who further said that in village’s people feel
appeasing gods like for rainfall and prevention of cruelty to Animals Act, 1960
it says that it is not and offence of it is killed in a manner prescribed. The
court asked the lawyer of the petitioner to pinpoint the violations and at
which temples or other religious places.
The court
is of the view that to harmony should be balanced between faith, religion and
such orders. The matter is very sensitive. In 2014 The Himachal Pradesh court
banned the slaughtering of animals in the state and now the apex court has
allowed this plea to be tagged along with orders petitions which have been
pending in the Supreme Court.
Petitioner
pleaded in the court that animal slaughter should be banned because these acts
of violence are committed on animals and mostly not by the devotees who are
untrained to carry out the execution of an animal causing minimal pain. Also
most of the sacrifices take place in public view and in children therefore it
signifies the barbaric nature and ancient practices that have their foundation
in superstition.
